The City of Lakewood is a proud three time winner of the prestigious 100 Best Communities Serving Young People award by America's Promise - The Alliance for Youth. Lakewood is one of only 43 communities across the United States that have been recognized as one of the 100 Best Communities three times in a row. Chaired by retired General Colin L. Powell, America’s Promise seeks access to provide youth with five fundamental resources - or "wrap-around supports" that young people need for success in life:
You are invited to take part. By becoming a partner in caring out a commitment to youth, you will be joining the efforts of Lakewood's Promise to improve the quality of life for all Lakewood citizens and restore the foundation on which our nation's prosperity, health and vitality depend.
A few ways an individual, family, organization, or business can take part in this effort is by:
- Volunteering to tutor a child ½ to 1 hour per week under the direction of a teacher
- Visiting a classroom to read or listen to students read
- Donating funds for the purchase of books for kids to take home
- Sponsoring reading incentives, e.g. coupons to local businesses, restaurants, movies, etc.
- Donating money for the purchase of books and supplies in the classroom
- Having your business "adopt" a school
