The City of Lakewood employs one full-time and one part-time victim advocate within the Legal Department who are available to assist victims in cases charged by the City. The advocates keep victims informed about the criminal case by acting as a liaison between the prosecuting attorneys, to help victims and witnesses better understand the court process. Advocates also provide information to victims and witnesses about their roles and responsibilities in a criminal case. Advocates will answer general questions regarding the court and the criminal justice system, as well as questions specific to the status and progress of a pending matter. In addition, advocates coordinate efforts to secure restitution for victims of crime.
Advocates routinely provide safety planning assistance, educate victims on the dangers of domestic violence, and provide courtroom support. Advocates assist victims with petitioning for Orders for Protection and also with the paperwork requesting a criminal No Contact Order be lifted.
Victim Advocates can be reached at (253) 589-2489.
