Mayor Douglas Richardson has served on the city council in position 5 since 1995 - shortly before the City officially incorporated. He is in his third (non-consecutive) term as mayor through 2011. During his tenure on the council, Mayor Richardson has focused on improving the quality of life in Lakewood through enhanced public safety, economic development, parks, and maintaining a solid partnership with neighboring Joint Base Lewis-McChord and Camp Murray.

Mayor Richardson was raised in West Groton, Massachusetts and came to the Lakewood area while serving on active duty with the 2nd Ranger Battalion on Fort Lewis. He is a graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, SC and was awarded a Masters in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. Mayor Richardson retired from the Army Reserve as a Brigadier General after completion of 32 years of active and reserve service and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.

For the past 27 years, Mayor Richardson has worked for the Northrop Grumman Corporation in Lakewood and is currently the Senior Manager of the Systems Integration Group. The Systems integration Group provides customers with system engineering, software integration and development, integrated logistics support, system security, and wireless network engineering services.

Mayor Richardson currently represents Lakewood on the Law Enforcement Support Agency Board, is the council liaison to the Public Safety Advisory Committee, chairs the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, is an alternate to the Pierce County Regional Council, a member of the Lakewood-Pierce County Joint-Determining Authority Board, and is active in a number of civic and fraternal organizations. Mayor Richardson and his wife, Charlene, have two grown children.
