Councilmember Jason Whalen has served on the City Council in Position 3 since 2010. Councilmember Whalen is the council liaison to the Lakewood Arts Commission. He currently serves on the Pierce County Regional Council. Councilmember Whalen was born in Whitefish, Montana. After moves to Oklahoma, Colorado, Montana, Oregon, and Alaska, he spent the majority of his young adult life in Spokane. He obtained his Honors Bachelors of Arts in Economics and Speech Communication from Gonzaga University in 1985, and his law degree from Gonzaga University School of Law in 1992.
Councilmember Whalen was commissioned through Gonzaga’s Army ROTC Program as a Second Lieutenant. He served as a field artillery officer in Bamberg, Germany from 1986 through 1989, returning to Gonzaga University to obtain his law degree. He was appointed as law clerk to Justice Richard P. Guy of the Washington State Supreme Court from 1992 to 1993. He subsequently joined the Tacoma law firm of Eisenhower & Carlson, PLLC, where he has served as attorney and partner since 1993, practicing in real estate, business and employment-related litigation.
Prior to his election to the City Council, Councilmember Whalen served as an elected member of the Pierce County Charter Review Commission in 2006. He also served as a member of the Planning Advisory Board to the City of Lakewood from 2006 to 2009. He is active in Lakewood Rotary, serves as a Board Member for the Northwest Sinfonietta, and in various leadership positions with St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Lakewood. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Lakewood Family YMCA, as well as the Tacoma-Pierce County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He continues his service to the community as a volunteer mediator for the Pierce County Dispute Resolution Center.
Councilmember Whalen has been married to Gael for 25 years. They have three daughters, Olivia, Claire and Alison.
