Elected to Office: January 2010

Councilmember Mike Brandstetter has served on the City Council in Position 2 since 2010- following his election in November 2009. He currently is the council liaison to the Community Development Block Grant Citizens Advisory committee and the Human Services Funding Advisory Committee.

Councilmember Brandstetter grew up in Shorewood, Wisconsin, near Milwaukee. He entered the United States Army in 1969. He and his wife of 40 years, Hae Yon, have resided in Lakewood since 1993 when he was assigned as the Command Sergeant Major of the 1st Military Police Brigade at Fort Lewis. He retired from the Army in 1999. During his career his military assignments took him to Korea, Germany, Kuwait and Iraq during Operation Desert Storm, Haiti, Panama and a variety of assignments in the United States. He holds a BS in business and management from the University of Maryland and an MA in Organizational Leadership from Chapman University.

Since 1999, Councilmember Brandstetter has worked for Bates Technical College where he is currently the Dean for Basic Studies and Engineering. In this capacity he oversees programs of instruction for over 800 students in GED preparation, English as a Second Language, engineering technician degrees, and specialized programs for low income residents of Pierce County. He represents the college on the Inter-college Relations Commission (ICRC), the Washington State Council for Basic Skills, and the Washington State Community and Technical Colleges Articulation and Transfer Council. He is currently the Board president of the Tacoma Area Coalition of Individuals with Disabilities (TACID).
