Abstract:

The wetland analysis was conducted using existing dtm surfaces provided by Pierce county and/or participating Cities. Primary sources include points and breaklines provided by Triathlon; points and breaklines provided by Pierce County from Surface Water Management aerial topography; points and brealines from the City of Lakewood provided through Pierce County; and 2 foot interval contours without source dtm surface provided by City of Puyallup. The soil Map layer and the County Wetland Inventory layers from Pierce County GIS data were used. Orthophotos were provided by Pierce County.

This data set identifies the different types of wetlands in Pierce County.

ANALYSIS PROCEDURE

The dtm surfaces were analyzed using Terramodel to identify depression or sink areas and their tributary drainage basins. This analysis located areas that are likely to have hydrologic regimes that will suppport wetlands. These areas were then visually analyzed in conjunction with soil mapping information and vegetative cover from the color orthophotos to determine locations and edges of probable wetlands.

These probable wetlands were then compared to the existing Pierce County Wetland Inventory layers wheich designate wetlands as either delineated, unverified, or verified. The delineated wetlands were georeferenced using the orthophotos to correct for improper location due to the inaccuracies in the parcel coverage. The unverified and verified coverage areas were also analyzed, and the final wetland areas and edges were converted to shape files.

Existing surveyed wetland edges from selected sites weree imported into the computer model, and the locations were compared to the modeling results above. Corrections were applied to the shape files as requeired, and differences were analyzed to immprove the modeling methodology.

DELIVERABLES

Shape files of wetland polygons in ArcView format were delivered for the portions of the study area where both dtm surfaces and the color orthophotos were available.
