Caring for their own by funding SAFETY
In 2011, the City of Lakewood invested $34,700 (74% of the requests received) in ensuring Lakewood’s citizens have access to programs that improve the quality of life by ensuring access to programs that promote safety. Covering a diverse range of opportunities in safety, the City partnered with the following programs:
Korean Women’s Association – We Are Family
The We Are Family Program provides prevention and intervention services to women and children who are victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. The program began in 1972 as KWA’s first volunteer effort, a domestic violence support group. Since then, KWA has expanded the program to provide services including counseling, bilingual support groups, family education programs, legal advocacy and assistance with court hearings, restraining orders, law enforcement reports, transitional/permanent housing and an emergency shelter. YWCA Tacoma
Since 1976, the YWCA has operated the largest domestic violence shelter in Pierce County. Their safe, free shelter provides basic needs for women and children for up to 90 days. While in shelter, women and their children access individualized case management, education, counseling, support groups, children’s services, and 24-hour on-site advocacy. The shelter and its related services provide a foundation to create lives free of violence. YWCA Pierce County
