RE: Pacific Highway SW Phase IV - Bridgeport Way to Gravelly Lake Drive
To the General Public:
Pacific Highway SW Phase IV Roadway Improvement Project is currently being constructed. There will be a closure of the bridge to all traffic around the clock for a duration of not to exceed two weeks. For the rest of the project area there will be two lanes of traffic and some single lane closures of that area. The closure will begin on March 1, 2010 and conclude March 14, 2010, and back open on the 15th of March 2010.
The access to business will still be completely accessible from Bridgeport Way. The City will install variable message signs on Pacific Highway, Bridgeport Way, Gravelly Lake Drive and I-5 directing motorists. The City will also set up a detour route (see attached). All detour signage excluding the signs on I-5 shall also contain and emphasize that businesses along Pacific Highway are open.

Parks Appreciation Day in Lakewood!!
April 24, 2010 - 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Join us at the City of Lakewood's 8th annual Parks Appreciation Day celebration. We are planning projects at Fort Steilacoom Park, American Lake Park, the city's Blue Berry Fields and Wards Lake Park. Join us between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and noon as we participate in a county-wide Parks Appreciation Day and jointly celebrate Earth Day, Arbor Day and National Parks Week.
You should dress appropriately for the weather; bring clearly-labeled hand tools from home (including such things as pruners, gloves, rakes, shovels, small pitch forks) and your enthusiasm, smiles and energy! This is a FUN event in the outdoors and you'll be able to help prepare our local parks for the busy spring/summer seasons.
Last year, hundreds of flowers and shrubs were planted on Parks Appreciation Day and and wood chips and mulch were spread on flower beds, playgrounds and in the blueberry fields. We've cleaned out barns, dismantled fences, painted shelters, built sidewalks, pressure washed playground equipment . . . the list is endless for the projects we've completed on previous Parks Appreciation Days. This year, new projects are planned to improve our local parks. We need your help.
Join us on Saturday, April 24th. To register your family, service organization or your school or church groups, please call Suzi Riley at 253-983-7758. We'll find a spot for you and will appreciate your help. |

Lakewood Breaks Ground on Pac Highway
Last of four phases
LAKEWOOD, WA - Last Wednesday, January 20th the City of Lakewood officially broke ground on Pacific Highway Phase IV. The project will run about a mile from Gravelly Lake Drive to Bridgeport Way through an area known as "Ponders." The roadway will be reduced from five to three lanes to increase parking space and improve the overall attractiveness of the roadway. The project will include new curbs, gutters, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, planter strips, street lighting, and storm drainage. The project will likely be completed later this summer.
Total project costs including design work will be around $6 million with $4 million of that going toward actual construction. A federal Transportation Enhancement Grant will fund $3 million of costs and the City's Surface Water Management Fund will pay for overdue storm water improvements.
The groundbreaking was conducted at the City's interim public works yard. The property was seized by the City after a condemnation action resulting from extensive and persistent illegal activities.
The Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and made a strong showing at the event, demonstrating the importance of this area to the business community. City manager Andrew Neiditz recalled the situation just two years ago. Property owners were expecting to pay a collective $3 million assessment until a key grant came through due to the efforts of the City's public works staff. Neiditz remarked "now these businesses will not have to worry about those costs. Improvements to Pac Highway are necessary for continuing the sharp turn around for what had been a seedy part of Lakewood's history." Mayor Doug Richardson also spoke at the event. He thanked Lakeview Light and Power for their willingness to bury power lines underground as part of this project. He also remarked that "it will now be possible for someone to walk from the southern end of Ponders along Pac Highway all the way to south Tacoma with the full benefit of sidewalks. This project will enhance the gateway to Lakewood and sustain our momentum in redeveloping Pac Highway."

Council passes resolution asking State to address safety issues
On Tuesday, January 19th the Lakewood City Council unanimously adopted a resolution opposing the Point Defiance Bypass project as it is currently proposed by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Since 2007, Lakewood has taken issue with the state’s decision to avoid an environmental review for this project in light of serious traffic and safety concerns.
The City Council underscored its support for viable transportation alternatives to congestion on Interstate 5 as it discussed the resolution on Tuesday night. Nonetheless, it noted that trains traveling at high speeds with no grade separation between trains and cars through urban areas, most of which are low-income, generated an unacceptable risk to community safety.
The resolution asks state and federal representatives to withhold financial support of the Point Defiance Bypass project until these concerns can be properly addressed.
A copy of this resolution is attached. |

PRESS RELEASE
December 1, 2009
For Immediate Release
Statement from Mayor Douglas Richardson on the shooting of Maurice Clemmons
"Reports this morning that a Seattle police officer had valiantly confronted and shot the man who murdered four of our police officers was very welcome news in Lakewood. We are especially grateful for the tenacity and dedication of so many law enforcement agencies in tracking down and eliminating the threat this killer posed to the community. To echo the words of Police Chief Bret Farrar, this only closes one chapter of what will be a long and difficult road for families, police, and citizens in Lakewood and the region. We must now focus on memorializing our fallen officers, continuing to take care of their families, and healing all those who knew and loved our officers."
