- Open House for Gravelly Lake Dr Overlay Project (Phase 2, 100th to Bridgeport) on May 20th: The City has invited adjacent businesses and property owners to attend an open house at City Hall on May 20th from 4:30pm to 6pm to get information about the upcoming project. The general public is also welcome.
- Police Unity Tour: Our 4 officers on the Unity Tour arrived safely in Washington D. C. on May 12th for the National Law Enforcement Memorial. Sergeants Mark Eakes and John Fraser and Officers Charles Porche and Michelle Hector rode their bicycles 320 miles, in honor of our four fallen officers, along with about 1,200 other riders from around the nation. It was the first Washington State participation in the event.
- National Peace Officers Memorial Service in Washington DC: Lakewood was well represented at the 29th annual national law enforcement memorial service in the nation's capital on May 15th. The families of our four fallen officers were hosted by the Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) foundation, and the City sponsored four escort officers and the four honor guard officers. The four officers who completed the Police Unity Tour were present, as well as a number of officers who took their own time off to participate at their own expense, so that over 20 officers were present. The mayor, deputy mayor, and city manager also attended. The President of the United States was the keynote speaker.
- 22nd Annual Candlelight Vigil: Simultaneous to the vigil on May 13th at Lakewood City Hall was the national vigil at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington DC, with thousands of police officers and families from around the nation. The names of our four fallen officers had been etched on the memorial, along with the names of others from around the nation. The Attorney General of the United States was the keynote speaker, and he graciously mentioned Lakewood's tragedy in his remarks.
- HR Director attends National Public Employers Labor Relations Academy: HR Director Debra Young attended the National Public Employers Labor Relations Academy in New Orleans after winning a free registration to the event. The conference focused on labor negotiations, investigations, legislative updates and employment law.
- WSAMA Spring Conference: City Attorney Heidi Wachter and Asst City Attorneys Mike McKenzie and Mike Savage attended the Washington State Association of Municipal Attorneys (WSAMA) Conference from May 5th -7th in Vancouver WA. Wachter finished her term as President and will now serve as Chair of the Nominating Committee. Savage facilitated a full session discussion on breaking municipal legal topics; both Savage and Wachter serve on the Civil Topics Committee.
- LPD brings suspect to justice: The defendant in the homicide of Tyrone Tinsley, which occurred in March 2009, pled guilty to Manslaughter 1st Degree and received a sentence of 102 months. This case crossed state borders in order to catch the suspect and bring him to justice, and was truly a team effort, with great work on the part of Detective Jeff Paynter and all officers involved.
- Community Safety & Resources Team (CSRT) hosts first Springbrook Neighborhood Apartment Manager Networking Meeting: CSRT member Gail Conelly hosted the first Springbrook Neighborhood Apartment Manager networking meeting on April 30th. Items on the agenda included the importance of networking among the neighborhood managers; communicating problems with residents and sharing creative ways to resolve issues; utilizing the CSRT and their available resources; and the importance of working with the police to document problems and issues in the apartment complexes. Also covered were other upcoming meetings, to include the monthly L.O.C.A.L. (Lakewood Organization of Community Active Landlords) meeting on May 18th. It was a good turnout with 13 apartment complexes represented.
- Sewer Project Phase 2 night road closures: The Woodbrook ALG / Tillicum Sewer Phase 2 - Force main construction on Gravelly Lake Drive and Pac Hwy - continues night closures in the vicinity of Gravelly Lake Drive and Pac Hwy - Monday - Thursdays. No work will occur on Friday nights to accommodate I-5 lane closures between Bridgeport Way and Gravelly Lake Drive.
