Repairs to I-5's Cracked Concrete Panels in Lakewood Begin This Weekend
A short-term project to preserve Interstate 5 from Lacey through Lakewood to Tacoma is about to get underway. Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will replace 21 concrete panels on northbound and southbound I-5 between College Street in Lacey and 38th Street in Tacoma. Several nighttime lane and ramp closures will be necessary during this preservation project beginning Thursday, Aug. 20. Over the weekend, traffic congestion is expected to build throughout each day. Motorists should expect delays, especially on Sunday, Aug. 23.
Thursday, Aug. 20, to the morning of Friday, Aug. 21
- Northbound I-5 will be reduced to a single lane at milepost 126.7, just north of Bridgeport Way, in Lakewood. The first lane closure will start at 7 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
- Up to two lanes of southbound I-5 at milepost 131 near the Tacoma Mall will close. The first lane closure will start 9 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 6 a.m.
