The source of raw sewage that was flowing sporadically into Waughop Lake from nearby Pierce College was found at the end of January.

City stormwater management officials met with the college's contractor as they found where a sewer pipe was mistakenly connected to a stormwater pipe. The contractor dug up the pipe and capped it, preventing further sewage from spilling into the lake through an outfall pipe from the college.

The next step for the college is to flush the storm pipe downstream and clean the lake at the outfall. A date for when this will happen has not been set.

Previously the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department posted caution signs around the lake because of the sewage spill. The water may not be safe for people or animals to enter. The city continues to work with all local partners to create a safe and healthy environment.
