The Lakewood Police Department will be offering some FREE Adventure in Boating Education classes starting this weekend. Sunday, April 27th from 9:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. There will be another class on Saturday May 17th and Saturday June 7th if this weekend doesn't work for you.
Reminder/Important information: Current state law requires those 59 years of age and younger to have in their possession a boater’s education card if they are operating a powered watercraft of 15 horsepower or greater. The fine amount for not having a card is $87.00 dollars along with your day on the water being over. (Age for registration to attend this class is 12 and up.)
Participants should bring their own snacks/beverages – only a ½ hour lunch break will be offered. Registration, which is FREE, is done through the City of Lakewood website at www.cityoflakewood.us. Under the Services drop down menu select Parks and Recreation. On the left hand tab under Related Documents select Register Online. This will send you to the Lakewood Parks/Rec ActiveNet system where you will hover over the "Activities" tab (next to the "Start" tab, middle of the page) and click on "Adult Classes." The contact for registration issues is Dennis Higashiyama and his office number is 253 983 7835.
After completing the class, participants will be provided their certificate and application for the boater’s education card. A $10.00 fee will have to be paid to Washington State Parks for the actual boater’s education card. The card doesn’t have an expiration date so there are no future renewal costs.
