Lakewood boasts one of the largest departments in the State of Washington. To successfully counter crime challenges, the Department operates a large array of programs and employs modern technology to expand its reach and efficiency. Lakewood offers all of the services and opportunities of “big” departments while maintaining focus on employee development and commitment to citizens. The result is a department that is flexible and efficient and best able to meet the needs of Lakewood, a diverse community of nearly 60,000 people with all of the public safety challenges of larger, urban communities.
Since the City's incorporation in 1996, as well as the Police Department's formation in 2004, the overall crime rate in the Lakewood community has been cut in half.
Formerly the Lakewood Fire Department, West Pierce Fire & Rescue serves the neighboring Cities of Lakewood and University Place.
