Lakewood Soliciting Candidates to Fill Council Vacancy

The City of Lakewood anticipates the resignation of Doug Richardson from the Lakewood City Council in January 2013. Mr. Richardson was recently elected to the Pierce County Council where he will represent the greater Lakewood area.

As an “optional code city” as defined by state law, the City Council will have 90 days to appoint a qualified candidate to the Position 5 (councilmember) once Mr. Richardson departs the council. The City asks interested Lakewood residents to submit a one-page letter of interest confirming their Lakewood residency, identifying why they are interested, and summarizing their qualifications. Candidates may attach a resume to this letter. Applicants must ensure these documents arrive at the City Clerk’s Office no later than 5pm, January 10, 2013. Documents may be mailed, hand delivered to the third floor counter at City Hall, or emailed to the City Clerk at .

During the January 14 study session, the Council will further refine the selection process. The Council’s goal is to select a new councilmember at its February 4 regular meeting. Position 5 will be subject to the 2013 election cycle and the winning candidate will assume office immediately after the election is certified.
