WEEKLY INFO BULLETIN
To: Mayor and Members of the Council
From: Heidi Wachter, Acting City Manager
- Holiday Closure: Lakewood City Hall will be closed Monday, September 5th in observance of the Labor Day holiday.
- Woodbrook Family Support Center: City employees in the following departments participated in sponsoring underprivileged children as part of a back to school program through the Woodbrook Family Support Center. The departments were: Finance, General Services, Legal, Parks & Recreation, Police & Human Resources. The commitment required their first day of school outfit (top, pants, & shoes), back pack and school supplies. Many employees provided over and above the basic requirements. It is always rewarding to witness such community support from City staff.
- Success with LoJack: Patrol officers responded to the report of a LoJack-equipped stolen car, located at the StarLite Drive-In Swap meet. The car, a Honda Accord, had been stolen in Tacoma a mere 20 minutes ago. Officers found the car, which the thieves had ironically just dropped off to have a car alarm installed. When the thieves returned and were arrested, the ProAc property crimes detectives swung into action. They traced the thieves to a major, active stolen vehicle chop shop operation, which yielded 3 complete engines, over 20 major vehicle parts, and a number of automobile frames, all of which had been recently stolen.
- LPD’s Reality TV Star: Detective Conan Higgins had qualified for the “All Stars Round” of the Frontsight Challenge, held in Pahrump, Nevada in June. This rigorous combat shooting competition brought the finest competitors from around the world to challenge for the final round. Detective Higgins did well enough to move into the second round, but there came in third place, with only the top two contestants moving to the finals. The competition will be televised in the spring of 2006…We’ll announce the date, time, and channel as soon as it’s known.
