The communications department oversees all public communication coming from the city. That includes all web articles, publications, press releases, social media, public engagement campaigns and outreach programs. The communications department is committed to providing a direct communication channel between the city and residents, and recognizes it often serves as the lone avenue for citizens to voice their suggestions, concerns and praise for the city.

The communications department, a division of the City Manager's Office, connects and engages with residents in different ways. These include:

In 2015, the City of Lakewood's Communication Division won its first National Association of Government Communicators Blue Pencil & Gold Screen Award for its #IamLakewood community imaging campaign.

A year later in 2016 the city's Lakewood Connections Magazine won first place for Most Improved Publication from NAGC's Blue Pencil & Gold Screen Awards.
