We recognize that people have a lot of questions and requests for additional information regarding the officer involved shooting that occurred on 04-21-15 in the City of Lakewood.  Today, we’re updating a few details from yesterday and providing a timeline of how information will be released.

CLARIFICATION - It is unknown at this time why the subject was running and why he chose to hide in the lumberyard.  No police agencies in the area were chasing him or actively looking for him prior to the lumberyard employees calling 911.

The suspect involved in the shooting incident has been identified as a 37 year old white male named DANIEL I. COVARRUBIAS.  Detectives are looking into his history and actions in Lakewood prior to the shooting.

The investigation is still ongoing and is being conducted by our Major Crimes Unit with assistance from the Cooperative Cities Crime Response Unit.  A concurrent investigation is also being conducted by investigators from the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. To protect the integrity of the investigation we are not releasing any details at this time. The investigation is in the early stages and there is still a lot of work to be completed; interviews need to be done, evidence needs to be collected (to include any audio/video evidence), and the medical examiner needs to conduct an autopsy and determine cause and manner of death.

The complete investigation will then be presented to the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office for review. At that time we will also present the facts to the Covarrubias family if they so desire. Once that is complete, a final media release will be sent out containing an account of the incident.

This process is consistent with best practices and also consistent with our past practices with our focus being to complete a thorough investigation to present to the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney and to the suspect’s family.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.
